Take the dream job challenge

Posted on the May 12th, 2008 under Careers & Education by Philippe Desrochers

Q. I have been looking for work for the past two months with no success. I am running out of time and I have exhausted all my options. Do you have any suggestions on what I have do next?

A. Take the dream job challenge, a unique one-day itinerary where you are looking for work in a very focused and precise way.

What is the purpose?

The challenge is designed to have you land your dream job in one day or land employment after the challenge but as a direct result of your work during the day. On May 7, 11 Sauder School of Business students tool the challenge and as a result attended 22 interviews on the day and booked 20 future interviews for a total of 42 interviews in one day!

How does it work?

In the morning from 9 a.m. to noon you physically visit seven companies. In the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. you call 20 companies. You only call decision makers (managers or directors). This approach does not work with human-resources. It works in office towers to retail to construction sites.

Who is it for?

This challenge has been used by hundreds of professionals and students ranging in ages from 19 to 71. It has worked for business students and professionals in accounting, architecture, healthcare and more. It also works if you just want any job.

The challenge works best if: (1) you have tried everything with no luck, (2) have had it with your current situation, (3) you have very little time to devote to job search, (4) you are running out of time or (5) you just plain like challenging yourself.

Credibility:

The challenge is based on an 18 month research study with 355 professionals. The study trained people on job search in three weeks. The most effective components of this three week program were distilled down to a one-day schedule.
