Feel like your career is on life support? You are not alone. There is a cure.
I have been teaching you how to write approach letters. I have received the most reader response ever in my 15 months with the paper.
There are letters expressing interest with any employer when there is no job posting. This strategy is extremely effective because some statistics say that up to 90% of all employers are looking for good people, even in a weakened economy.
Elevator: Approach letters work because they take advantage of the hit factor. Advertisers know that it can take up to seven times for someone to see their ad before buying a product. Fortunately, to land great work it takes less. A letter is one hit. Followup is two. A meeting is three.
It’s just like seeing someone in the same elevator more than once. You start to warm up to them. IN this market, warm is very good. It builds trust.
Non HR: I love human resources, but this is a non-human resources strategy. Approach letters must be sent to the person that can make the final hiring decision. You must send your letter to a manager or director in the department in which you want to work. Tip: go to linkedin.com to find their name.
Ask: Ask you and shall receive. Companies hire entrepreneurs. Companies hire self driven people. After you send your letter, an employer will not call you. You must call them and ask for an interview.
Script: Use these words, word for word. Three to four days after sending your approach letter follow up with a phone call. Cal the manager only:
“Hello, it’s ____. I sent you a letter last week. I am quite interested in your company and department. The purpose of my call is to arrange a 10-15 minute meeting to discuss possible employment opportunities. Would Tuesday work or would Thursday be more convenient?”
PS: Never ask them if they read it. If they didn’t they feel stupid. This is bad. Assume they read it.
Next step: Call the three employers I asked you to send letters to. Email me with the results and I will print the most successful one.

Question:
I’ve been looking for new work for the past four months and have received only one interview. There must be something wrong with my resume. Do you have any tips?
Answer:
I compared resume success rates prior to and after implementing the following one piece of advice. You will achieve a 300 percent increase in booking interviews by following it on the letter.
It’s sentences. That’s it. More specifically, achievement sentences.
Everyone says you must start your sentences with a verb, but what no one tells you is that there are good verbs and bad verbs. Let’s start with the verbs “negotiated”, “marketed,” “trained,” “led,” “developed,” and “analyzed.”
These are good verbs, but not to start your sentence with. These verbs are what I call secondary or duty verbs.
Instead, start your sentence with result verbs: “Maximized,” “decreased,” “increased,” “improved,” “reduced,” “closed,” “outperformed,” “sold.”
These verbs are fantastic. Start by saying how well you did and then how you achieved it. Here is an example.
Useless: Negotiated three new contracts with one existing and two new suppliers. Developed new scheduling system for part-time staff.
Better: Negotiated three new contracts with one existing and two new suppliers and reduced costs by 12 percent. Developed scheduling system for part-time staff and was promoted to assistant manager within three months.
Best: Reduced costs by 12 percent by negotiating three new contracts with one existing and two new suppliers. Promoted to assistant manager within three months for having developed a new scheduling system for part-time staff.
To achieve these results, you will have to spend 15 to 20 hours on your resume. But it’s worth it.

Q. I have been looking for work for the past two months with no success. I am running out of time and I have exhausted all my options. Do you have any suggestions on what I have do next?
A. Take the dream job challenge, a unique one-day itinerary where you are looking for work in a very focused and precise way.
What is the purpose?
The challenge is designed to have you land your dream job in one day or land employment after the challenge but as a direct result of your work during the day. On May 7, 11 Sauder School of Business students tool the challenge and as a result attended 22 interviews on the day and booked 20 future interviews for a total of 42 interviews in one day!
How does it work?
In the morning from 9 a.m. to noon you physically visit seven companies. In the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. you call 20 companies. You only call decision makers (managers or directors). This approach does not work with human-resources. It works in office towers to retail to construction sites.
Who is it for?
This challenge has been used by hundreds of professionals and students ranging in ages from 19 to 71. It has worked for business students and professionals in accounting, architecture, health-care and more. It also works if you just want any job.
The challenge works best if: (1) you have tried everything with no luck, (2) have had it with your current situation, (3) you have very little time to devote to job search, (4) you are running out of time or (5) you just plain like challenging yourself.
Credibility:
The challenge is based on an 18 month research study with 355 professionals. The study trained people on job search in three weeks. The most effective components of this three week program were distilled down to a one-day schedule.
Next Step:
Download a free copy of the One-Day Dream Job itinerary at www.1daydreamjobchallenge.org. Set a date of your calendar to do the challenge.
Daily remedy:
Focus on action and results are automatic.
