Question: “I am a university student and I have to make a choice in my career. It is causing me much more stress than I expected. I feel like any decision I make is final and I am afraid of making the wrong choice. I think I want to get into marketing but how do I know for sure? How do I know if I have made the right choice?”

Answer: Career Leader is a business career assessment tool out of Harvard that identifies your personal profile and matches you to the profiles of those who are successful in business. It literally gives you the answer you are looking for.

I have adminsitered this value assessment to hundres of students…buyt it has one major flaw. It does not make the final decision for you.

Whether or not to choose marketing is not your issue. You don’t know how to make a decision and stand behind it with confidence. Literally, five days ago I discovered a way you can achieve this. Follow these three steps to achieve this aim.

STEP #1:
After conducting your research for a maximum of three weeks, decide on career that interests you the most now. This is an initial choice. One that will only get you started.

STEP #2:
In your case, you choose marketing. But marketing jobs must not be your priority. You must simply be committed to identifying the skills required to be successful in marketing. Visit www.careeroverview.com to identify these skills.

STEP #3:
Then gain experience in a position where you are using some or all of these skills, whether or not it is in the field of marketing. Marketing may or may not be your ultimate career. But you must make an initial choice in order to identify the skills you would most like to develop now. You can never go wrong by learning something new that interests you the most at that time. This is a subtle point and you have to get it. Re0read this paragraph if you have to.

The number one way to be happiest is to continue to make career choices that are based on learning a new skill. The easiest way to identify which skills to learn is to look into the future and ask yourself which career path is the most appealing. Remember, the only failure is failure to decide.
