Question:
“I have been with my current position for eight years. I am not happy with my work but I can’t seem to make a move. How can I gain the courage to do something about this.”
Answer:
You are an addict. For some people, leaving anything is as difficult as quitting a cocaine habit. Your drug of choice is your current position.
Seven year itch: All living organisms have a natural life cycle. Each cycle lasts seven years. You have heard of the “seven year itch” in marriages. That itch is our natural cycle telling us that we need to grow. If we do not change, we begin to die inside.
The solution: The most important question you could ever ask yourself is: “What would I need to do in order to feel that I am growing?” There are two ways to do this.
Reinvent: Ask yourself what changes could make your work more interesting?”
Leave: This is hard to do if you are addicted to it. Stay tuned for future articles.
Next step: Book a meeting with your boss to reinvent your position or book a meeting with a coach to develop a growing career strategy.
Weekly Remedy: It has been scientifically proven that an old dog can learn new tricks.
