philippe-blueNo experience?  This week we’ll look at some of the best strategies to land great work.

Last week I responded to a kid’s question about how to enter the finance industry.  I suggested he write an approach letter. He came back with another question:

I don’t know what kind of skill I should put in my approach letter since I don’t have any experience?

What you do have is passion. Here is your personalized Passion Plan based on how I entered my industry with no experience in six years ago:

Rule No. 1: Always move towards your career goal no matter how small the step feels.

Rule No. 2: Experience is made up of skills and industry knowledge.

“Hello, I was wondering if you can help me? I have done some research and am very interested in the type of work you do here. I would like to offer my services to volunteer in your finance department. Who would you suggest I speak to?”

Rule No. 3: The fastest way to gain skills is to volunteer.

Rule No. 4: The fastest way to enter the industry is by doing paid entry level work.

Rule No. 5: Never take volunteer or paid position unless you are learning something that is moving you towards your goal.

Step 1: Walk into your top 10 favourite companies and ask to speak to the Directors of Finance.

Tell them that you love the industry, and that you have no experience, and will do whatever it takes to work for them. You will probably start making photocopies.

Step 2: Google The Red Book to find non-profit or volunteer organization you believe in.

Walk into 10 organizations and say this to the receptionist:

“Hello, I was wondering if you can help me? I have done some search and am very interested in the type of work you do here. I would like to offer my services to volunteer in your finance to volunteer in your finance department. Who would you suggest I speak to?”

Step 3: In the evening attend finance classes at BCIT and begin studying for the Canadian Securities Course.

Education is fantastic because it gives you credentials and street credibility but it also connects you with teachers and classmates who are all interested in what you love.

It is fertile ground for great conversations and building life long contacts.

Step 4: After one year you will have the following: Finance experience, industry experience and finance knowledge. Your career is now launched.
