philippe-blueFeel like your career is on life support? You are not alone. There is a cure.

“I recently took the Myers-Briggs personality assessment  for the second time. I took it to help me gain clarity around my career choice but my results came out differently the second time? I thought we were born with our type? I don’t trust the results now. Can you help?

I had taken the assessment three times in a 10-year period and found it useless. As it is the No. 1 career assessment tool in the world, and having had several people ask me to deliver workshops, I decided to become a qualified Myers Briggs trainer.

After training, I still found it useless.

On March 22, 2009, everything changed. I delivered a Myers-Briggs workshop and I finally got it. I will now share my simple yet profound findings.

The assessment claims that your type is innate; that you are born with int. However, a colleague of mine had her type change as well — three times for that matter. What is going on?

Your type has changed for only two reasons. You are either moving closer to or further away from your true self. In other words, are you getting happier or sadder? Deep down, your true preferences exist, however they are often cloaked by your influencers. You are either influenced by yourself or society.

It’s important to note that you must be influenced by society or else you will be an outcast. But you must never be influenced when making a career choice.

If you answered the questions the way you think you should to be successful, then you are influenced by society. When you are influenced by yourself, you are asking yourself what you genuinely prefer — even if it sounds bad (You prefer to go home than go outu to a networking party.)

Many people think that they are doomed if they are the wrong type. Just remember that you can have the skill to do all types but if you want to sustain a long career, you must be true to your type. For example, a president of a large organization I used to work for was an introvert but she had to network. Knowing her type, she stayed at events for about 30 minutes instead of two hours.

You can lie to yourself and be very successful. I know many people who are very talented and make great money, and some are very unhappy. The value of this assessment is to find the type of career where you can have a real impact through longevity.

You now have two choices. You either wait to get older until you know yourself better, or you can have the courage to admit who you are. Do you have the guts?

You don’t have to prove anything. Your job is to identify your gifts and to express them in the form of service to others. When you do this, you will be content and the money will come. What is your gift?
