Question:
I am an ESL teacher undertaking graduate studies in Professional Communication. I want to apply my knowledge while finishing my degree. How do I break into an industry with relatively no experience but the potential for growth, and where would I look for communication jobs?
Answer:
I’ll start with the bad news to get it out of the way. If you were an accountant you would have to learn one subject…accounting. In communications, you have to learn two: The subject of comminication and what you are communicating.
TIP #1
Industry knowledge is critical to finding work in this field. The easiest way is to work in the areas you already love or are knowledgeable in.
TIP #2
There are three perfect jobs for you: Communications co-ordinator/assistant or analyst. These are entry level positions. The salary range for these positions is $40,000 to $60,000 (www.salaryexpert.com). I found all these positions currently posted on www.monster.ca
TIP #3
If you do not love or have knowledge in an industry, then identify 10 companies you would be interested in that have communication departments. Then join the customer service department to learn about the industry. However, you must clearly indicate in your interview that the reason you are accepting it is to learn about the company inside and out so that you can represent it competently in its communication. Give yourself one year to make your move, and include this clause in your contract.
TIP #4
Book an information meeting with your favorite professor to pick their brain. Ask them to secret question at the end: “If you were me, who would you suggest I speak to next?”
TIP #5
Become an immediate member of the Canadian Communication Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Attend one networking event per month and their national conference. The later association also has current job postings in both the U.S. and Canada.
