From bankruptcy to a dream job
Question:
“I want to hear your story. Do you even know what it is like to not enjoy your work? It is very difficult to make changes.”
Answer:
When I was 11-years old I had a sense of what I wanted to be when I grew up. However, I ignored that desire for 15 years. It was not until I was on my knees and in complete despair that I accepted who I really was.
I studied and worked in finance. I hated it. I chose finance because my best friend convinced me, in the cafeteria no less, to do so. I was like a feather in the wind taking advice from everyone but myself.
I had essentially ignored my inner voice. I ended up depressed, living in a basement apartment with bugs and driving a car that leaked. At the very end, I declared bankruptcy. I have memory where I was on my hands saying:
“There is something with me. I’ll never be happy.”
Often you need to hit the bottom of the barrel before you make healthy changes. That is when I decided I would not live my life doing what I hated anymore. I would do anything to pursue teaching — my one career love.
Lesson #1:
You cannot liten to others until you have asked yourself what you want. If you don’t know what you want, then follow things you are curious about.
Lesson #2:
If you ignore your true career desires, first your spirit will die and then your physical body will die too. My recovery was, in my opinion, a miracle. I could never have imagined how quickly things would turn around for me. Today, I do what I love and my career is dedicated to helping you do the same.
Next step:
Ask yourself: “Do I want to love my work more than I want to stay where I am?” If the answer is yes then ask yourself what it is you love so much about it.
Weekly remedy:
Reread the “next step.” It is that important.
